    1 Day Beginner’s Course

Struggling to find my father in law a Christmas gift so thought a day out doing Something creative. A beginner’s wood turning day with Les was fantastic. Les is very skilled and able to teach whilst making you feel at ease. The facilities are excellent and the whole day was fun and informative. It has opened my eyes to wood turning and I will be looking to book with Les again for future courses. If you want a day out with fun and creating something I would very highly recommend.

Les Thorne beginner 1 day course

    Excellent.
I’ve been turning for a few months, but knew I wasn’t doing things properly, so I signed up for this course. I wish I could have done it earlier because I wouldn’t have had so many bad habits already.
Les is a very good instructor, plenty of patience (which he needed with me) and a very clear manner of getting his point across and
    his demonstrations are first class.
The whole workshop setup works well for learners and I found it a comfortable place to work.

    Beginners course

This was the second beginners course in the last year, again another great day with Les And Martin, the day was very well presented with plenty of great instruction and most of all lots of practical tasks to help new and improve woodturning students. The results of the day are turned items which
Are a great example of how well the day went. Martin gave us an introduction to polishing our work with the Hampshire sheen wax and cellulose sealer which gave a beautiful finish to the pots we turned in the morning, finishing the afternoon with a nice ash bowl finished in the new citrus oil finish which
Not only gave a nice finish also
Left a fresh citrus aroma even my wife liked it?
To anyone thinking of beginning or wanting to improve your woodturning skills and general knowledge then you can not beat the value of spending a day at the woodturning shop.
I certainly will look to book a more advanced course in the near future

    Utterly Brilliant

Wow, wow and more wow! My husband and I booked onto this course and could not fault it. From start to finish it was excellent. Les explained everything brilliantly and made it look so easy. It was enjoyable, informative and competitive (between my husband and I!!). We made a bud vase out of sycamore and a bowl out of ash and the skills, hints and tips we picked up along the way were fantastic. Les was a brilliant instructor and so was Martin with his finishing techniques. We’ve been on many courses but this has to be the best and we will definitely return again. Thanks for an amazing day. Best day of training ever! Really encouraging and informative

    Ian Ryder (verified owner)

I came on this course as an absolute beginner – had bought a lathe but never touched it after my original planned training was cancelled due to Covid. I’m really glad that I booked this beginners course with Les and Martin, as it was the most informative and fun day of training that I can remember. Came away with a bowl and ‘weed pot’ (see photo, complete with weed) that exceeded my expectations, and plenty of confidence to try more on my own from now on. Everything about the course was excellent – the structure, the timing, health and safety advice and the hands on guidance throughout – plus a great lunch and plenty of laughs along the way. Couldn’t ask for more…

    Beginners’ Day Tuition

I’m SO pleased I took the plunge and booked this day’s tuition when I did. I’d
had my lathe for about a month and had turned a few things but was at the stage of wanting to make sure I was doing things correctly before going any further. This was absolutely perfect for that and perfectly timed for me; with just enough knowledge to know what I wanted to get out of it but without bad habits being too set in.
Les is an excellent teacher, one of those kind that you think back fondly on from school days that had just the right blend of relaxed and being completely on the ball about them! I really appreciated the timings that he stuck to throughout the day also which helped me get on top of carrying out each stage of the project at an appropriate pace for it rather than spending too long unnecessarily working on something. Insights in to his professional work and seeing some of his creations were really welcome too and it was amazing to have Martin there also, demonstrating finishing and just adding invaluably to the expertise and experience on hand for the day.
The only downside was that it all went far too quickly and I was sorry to have to leave. But I drove all the way home with a huge smile on my face, a bowl without a flat bottom, and my first proper ‘bead’…

Huge thanks to Les and Martin.
