Spring Has Sprung at The Woodturning Shop!

March has brought warmer weather this week, and more sunshine so it is nice to see that nature is waking up after a cold and windy February.

Save the Date!

We’re opening our doors to turners and visitors on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th April to enjoy professional demonstrations by Gary Rance, Les Thorne and Martin Saban-Smith and meet some of our trade partners in our teaching room.

Entry is free of charge!

Here in our shop, we are very glad to see everyone who pops in: our existing customers and other ‘wonderers’ who are interested in who we are and what we do that come from the garden centre.

Saturday 12th March

On Saturday, Martin had three students for an improvers bowl turning course to boost their skills and achieve excellent results. This course is designed for those woodturners who already have some experience but would like to improve it. Martin explains bevel angles, mounting options, proportions, dealing with common problems and more in his relaxed style of teaching.

Monday 14th March

Despite everyday business Martin has here running The Woodturning Shop, Hampshire Sheen, Woodturning 360, etc., he is finding time for fun too. As a challenge after Colin Colwin’s demo for Woodturning 360 Martin turned a German Smoker.

Tuesday 15th March

On Tuesday, Les had three students for a One Day Beginners Course who learnt basic woodturning skills, use of tools and machinery, sharpening tools, sanding and finishing technics etc. Students were treated to a coffee and lunch in a coffee shop and enjoy 10% off in the Woodturning shop.

Cut your chuck recesses and spigots as accurately as possible for the best grip.

Les’s Tip of the Week

Thursday 17th March

Thursday was one of the days we spent getting ready for the Woodturning Event, coming up on 8 and 9 April 2022. We are very excited about this event and have been planning to do it for a long time now.

In order for everyone to enjoy it we have a made a list of thing to do before the event. Today we have cleared some space for a new shed that will be built next week, cut some more blanks of wood for the shop, contacted some guests who are coming for the event and other arrangements.

There is still a lot to do and we are full of anticipation and excitement.

Friday 18th March

On Friday, Les had a group of students who returned for their Second day of Two Days Beginners Course. Back in the middle of February, the second day of their course had to be postponed due to one of the winter storms. The students were happy to come back for day two which included the turning of a lidded box with end grain hollowing and jam chucking.
